Ever since the first official baseball game took place in 1846 in Hoboken, New Jersey, America's traditional pastime has enamored countless millions 一 not only in the U.S. but globally. Now, Major League Baseball (MLB) promises to captivate a booming fan base through a technological shift that’s set to improve every aspect of the sport.

Here are five ways tech is transforming MLB.

1. A New Era of Sports Collectibles

Memorabilia is a major industry, and no memorabilia is more iconic than the baseball card. Famed card-maker Topps recently gave their long-loved product a futuristic makeover, allowing fans to buy, sell, and trade NFTs.

Candy Digital, purveyors of virtual collectibles, also joined "The Bigs" of MLB NFT. In their January 15 debut, they passed $1 million in trade volume within eight hours then "posted $2.7 million weekend sales."

The move towards digitality offers greater variety, special deals, limited items, and the chance to earn goodies through unique events or promotions. These incentives may also be included with ticket sales, to boost fans' experiences at famed ballparks.

2. Context-specific Analytics and AI

If an analytics engine records a player achieving a single, this signifies (no pun intended) a single thing: the player reached first. But it lacks context. More intuitive analytics would provide this missing context, logging exactly how a player notched their single. Did they manage a good hit or just a good run? And how did the other team react?

These extra details, especially over time and sorted by team or player, can open up the game with more complex, situation-specific strategies. After all, what's the point of AI if it doesn't fully understand the impact of in-game events?

3. Biomechanical Studies for Improved Health and Performance

Virtual analyses aren't just exceptional at breaking down plays; they can zoom in and break down individual movements with equal detail. The study of biomechanics can improve athletic performance and reduce injuries, thanks to more accurate, attentive technologies that allow the most detailed evaluations yet.

With increased sophistication comes ease of use, and it no longer requires an expert to interpret the results. This smarter yet simpler approach is more accessible and practical, as it can help coaches and staff deliver quick evaluations or make on-the-fly changes.

4. More Accurate Decision-making and Tracking Tech

The Hawk-Eye tracking platform creates a virtual strike zone to improve the accuracy of on-field calls. Hawk-Eye adjusts its virtual strike zone based on each player's dimensions and stance to provide unmatched precision.

This revolutionary system is just one component of Statcast, which enhances immersion for tens of millions of spectators by following potentially every single thing that occurs on a baseball field.

It’s employed by all 30 MLB stadiums, utilizing radar technology and high-resolution optics to track every player's position and movement during the game. As a result, it offers fans, analysts, coaches, and everybody else an unprecedented opportunity to delve into any and all happenings at their favorite ballpark.

5. Better, More Extensive Green Initiatives

What's great for players and fans is also great for the planet. Upcoming eco-focused technologies will make sporting organizations more sustainable and globally impactful through green initiatives

These include an increasing reliance on renewable resources, recycling, and a focus on eliminating single-use plastics while making venues more energy-and-material efficient. Many MLB clubs now operate food donation programs and on-site gardens, utilize LED lighting and solar power, and have proper e-waste handling practices.

The Future of Baseball

Over the past two centuries, baseball has transcended sport to become a cultural institution. And with no shortage of exciting projects and improvements, it will undoubtedly enjoy an equally bright future.
